There’s so much more that goes into a boudoir session than showing up and taking photos. For Jojo’s Kansas City boudoir session, I wanted the entire shoot to feel intentional and completely different from one setup to the next. We planned her looks, created multiple sets in my Kansas City studio, played with veils, flowers, candlelight, and even a little fog. The whole session took about three and a half hours, giving us plenty of time to create without feeling rushed.

Planning a Kansas City Boudoir Session From Start to Finish

One of my favorite parts of boudoir is helping with everything that happens before you ever step in front of my camera. I can help plan your outfits, design the concepts, source props, and figure out what we need to bring the whole idea together. For Jojo, I planned her outfit and provided the veil. A lot of brides don’t have their veil yet when we do their session, or sometimes the veil they have isn’t quite right for the look we’re creating, so I always have options we can use. And while bridal boudoir is always fun, you definitely don’t have to be a bride to do this. You can be engaged, married for fifteen years, or have absolutely no wedding on the calendar. It’s really just an excuse to create something beautiful that feels like you right now.

Designing Jojo’s Dreamy Boudoir Sets

For the first setup, we used my Willow Canvas backdrop with a single white rose and lots of soft layers. From there, I wanted to completely change the mood. I brought in layers of fabric, candles and candlesticks, then added a fog machine to get that hazy, candlelit look you see in some of the photos. That set alone took me about 30 minutes to build, and it was honestly so fun to see the idea come together. For our next scene, I set up a bed with more layered fabrics and reused the baby’s breath from our earlier setup. I love being able to take the same pieces and completely change how they photograph. It gave us another look without the session feeling disconnected or overly styled.

The Full Kansas City Boudoir Session Experience

My boudoir sessions are meant to be an experience, not something where you’re in and out of the studio in an hour. We have time to change looks, try different ideas, adjust the sets, and actually enjoy the process. You don’t need to walk in knowing how to pose or having every detail figured out, that’s a big part of what I’m there for. Every boudoir session also includes a 20-page, 10×10 leather or linen album. After putting this much thought into creating the photos, I want them to live somewhere other than your camera roll. We create a fine art album that you can keep and look back on years from now.
